Brothers in arms: USL v Connacht clash throws up unique rivalry   18/11/2017

There will be a unique occasion this afternoon at the FAI Intermediate Inter-League Tournament as two Letterkenny brothers are in opposing dugouts.

Ulster Senior League manager Anthony Gorman comes up against Connacht, who are managed by his brother, Gareth, at Eamonn Deacy Park this afternoon (2.30pm).

Gareth is a former Galway United and Sligo Rovers player, who now manages Mervue United.

For both teams, today is a must-win game following defeats last night, with the USL losing 2-1 to Leinster and Connacht beaten 2-0 by Munster.

“It’s a strange one with Gareth looking after Connacht,” USL manager Anthony Gorman said.

“I haven’t been speaking to him about it really.”

Their dad, Tony, will be in attendance at today’s game, which isn’t the first time the siblings have faced off.

Anthony said: “When he was at Derry and I was at Coleraine, we played against each other. And when he was at Sligo and I was at Finn Harps, we were up against each other.

“We had a kick during the game and a handshake afterwards!”

The USL side is sweating on the fitness of striker Sean McCarron, who had to be withdrawn during last night’s game at Mervue.

To stand a chance of collecting the Michael Ward Trophy, the USL side must win and will be on the look-out for favourable results elsewhere.

Gorman said: “We still have six points to play for. It’s not the start we wanted by any means. As staff and as a League, we can take a lot of positives from the performance.

“We need favours from the other games now, but we still have to go out and get the wins ourselves and fight for the six points we have left to fight for.”
